Understanding Fenestration Performance –
A Practical Approach

CEU Credit:

1 AIA LU/HSW

Program Description:

This program provides a comprehensive overview of key fenestration performance parameters, serving as a practical "cheat sheet" for professionals looking to understand why we use certain window and glazing performance requirements in building projects. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of both glass- and frame-related performance factors, ensuring they can make informed decisions to meet project-specific performance targets. The course will emphasize understanding the reasons why certain performance values are used and balancing thermal, visual, and durability considerations.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

Understand Key Fenestration Parameters:

Define and interpret critical glass performance metrics, including U-value,

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), visible light transmittance and reflectance, and acoustical properties.

Explain the role of fenestration in overall building energy performance.

Glass Selection for Performance Goals:

Analyze how different glazing configurations affect thermal performance,

daylighting, and sound transmission.

Evaluate trade-offs between energy efficiency, occupant comfort,

and aesthetic requirements.

Assess Frame-Related Performance Considerations:

Understand and apply key air and water infiltration standards

to ensure building envelope integrity.

Identify factors influencing condensation resistance and strategies

to mitigate moisture-related concerns.

Apply Performance Data to Project-Specific Scenarios:

Use fenestration performance data to inform code compliance,

certification programs, and project specifications.

Develop strategies for achieving the appropriate fenestration

requirements for the usage of the building.
